De vidste dog ikke dengang, at teateret og mange af dem ikke ville f\u00e5 lov at se den anden akt. Iroquois Theatre var kendt i Chicago p\u00e5 dav\u00e6rende tidspunkt. Det \u00e5bnede i slutningen af november 1903, og if\u00f8lge en teaterkritiker var det \u201cdet smukkeste teater i Chicago ... og kompetente dommere erkl\u00e6rer, at f\u00e5 teatre i Amerika kan m\u00e5le sig med dets arkitektoniske perfektioner ...\u201d. Det var dog tydeligt, at disse fremtr\u00e6dener var vildledende. Hurtigt blev \u2018Kilfyre\u2019-slukkere brugt\u2026 men det var allerede for sent, da branden spredte sig h\u00f8jt over scenen. Desv\u00e6rre ville det ikke blive bedre. Teatret var fuld af meget brandfarlige malede l\u00e6rredsbilleder, l\u00e5ste porte og andre farer. Selv brandgardinet mellem scenen og publikum, der skulle adskille omr\u00e5derne i tilf\u00e6lde af brand, var ikke kun l\u00f8st op halvvejs ned, men var prim\u00e6rt lavet af tr\u00e6masse og asbest. Det oprindelige br\u00e6ndstof for branden synes at have v\u00e6ret scenegardinen \u2013 som nu er tilg\u00e6ngelig i brandfast materiale.<br \/><\/span><span>Selvom der havde v\u00e6ret en brand, ville moderne slukkere have kunnet h\u00e5ndtere det indledende brand, hvis de blev opdaget i tide og den rigtige type slukker blev brugt. Endnu l\u00e6ngere frem i tiden er de moderne bygningsregler ogs\u00e5 meget anderledes. Bedre brandudgange ville have gjort det lettere for flere mennesker at evakuere. Desuden ville designet af trapper og andre korridorer v\u00e6re mere hensigtsm\u00e6ssigt.
