Ils \u00e9taient alors loin de se douter que le th\u00e9\u00e2tre, et nombre d'entre eux, ne verraient pas le deuxi\u00e8me acte. L'Iroquois Theatre \u00e9tait bien connu \u00e0 Chicago \u00e0 l'\u00e9poque. Il a ouvert ses portes \u00e0 la fin du mois de novembre 1903 dans ce qu'un critique dramatique a qualifi\u00e9 de \"plus beau ... de Chicago, et des juges comp\u00e9tents affirment que peu de th\u00e9\u00e2tres en Am\u00e9rique peuvent rivaliser avec ses perfections architecturales ...\". Il est clair cependant que les apparences sont trompeuses. Voici quelques-unes des questions soulev\u00e9es :<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"uncode-wrapper uncode-list\">\n<ul class=\"icons\">\n<li><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-right text-accent-color\"><\/i>Sorties de secours inad\u00e9quates<\/li>\n<li><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-right text-accent-color\"><\/i>Les boiseries sont fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9es pour<\/li>\n<li><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-right text-accent-color\"><\/i>Pas d'arrosage<\/li>\n<li><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-right text-accent-color\"><\/i>Pas d'alarme incendie<\/li>\n<li><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-right text-accent-color\"><\/i>Le manque de t\u00e9l\u00e9phones<\/li>\n<li><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-right text-accent-color\"><\/i>Pas de raccordements d'eau<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"uncode_text_column\">\n<p>En fait, il s'est av\u00e9r\u00e9 que la seule protection contre l'incendie consistait en l'existence de six extincteurs \"Kilfyre\" con\u00e7us pour les incendies r\u00e9sidentiels. Ces extincteurs \u00e0 base de poudre \u00e9taient con\u00e7us pour les incendies se d\u00e9clarant au ras d'une surface telle qu'un plancher, ce qui, comme nous le verrons, \u00e9tait totalement inad\u00e9quat pour le th\u00e9\u00e2tre Iroquois.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column pos-top pos-center align_left column_child col-lg-6 single-internal-gutter\"><div class=\"uncol style-light\" ><div class=\"uncoltable\"><div class=\"uncell no-block-padding\" ><div class=\"uncont\" ><div class=\"uncode_text_column\" ><\/p>\n<p>D\u00e8s le d\u00e9but de la repr\u00e9sentation, la salle affichait complet, avec pr\u00e8s de 2 200 personnes entass\u00e9es dans les trois niveaux de la salle.<br \/>\nAlors que le deuxi\u00e8me acte - une sc\u00e8ne de nuit - se pr\u00e9parait vers 15h15, il semble que des \u00e9tincelles provenant d'une lampe \u00e0 arc aient mis le feu \u00e0 un rideau de mousseline. Rapidement, les extincteurs \"Kilfyre\" ont \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9s... mais il \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 trop tard, car le feu se propageait au-dessus de la sc\u00e8ne. Malheureusement, les choses ne vont pas s'arranger. Le th\u00e9\u00e2tre \u00e9tait rempli de toiles peintes hautement inflammables, de portes verrouill\u00e9es et d'autres dangers. M\u00eame le rideau coupe-feu entre la sc\u00e8ne et le public, cens\u00e9 s\u00e9parer les deux zones en cas d'incendie, s'est non seulement accroch\u00e9 \u00e0 mi-chemin, mais il \u00e9tait \u00e9galement compos\u00e9 de pulpe de bois et d'amiante. Pour r\u00e9sumer, le manque cruel de sorties, les portes verrouill\u00e9es et les passages et escaliers mal con\u00e7us ont fait que lorsqu'une boule de feu s'est propag\u00e9e dans la zone des si\u00e8ges du public et a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 engloutir la salle de th\u00e9\u00e2tre, de nombreuses personnes n'ont pas pu s'en sortir ou ont \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9cras\u00e9es en le faisant.<br \/>\nEn raison de l'absence d'alarme incendie ou de t\u00e9l\u00e9phone, les pompiers locaux n'ont \u00e9t\u00e9 alert\u00e9s que lorsque l'un des machinistes a litt\u00e9ralement couru jusqu'\u00e0 la station de pompiers la plus proche. Au total, 575 personnes sont mortes le jour de l'incendie, et d'autres sont d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9es dans les semaines qui ont suivi. \u00c0 peine un jour plus tard, des changements ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 se produire pour tenter d'\u00e9viter une situation similaire. Certains th\u00e9\u00e2tres ont supprim\u00e9 les places debout. Le combustible initial de l'incendie semble avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 le rideau de sc\u00e8ne - qui est aujourd'hui disponible dans un mat\u00e9riau ignifuge.<br \/><\/span><span>M\u00eame s'il y avait eu un incendie, les extincteurs modernes auraient \u00e9t\u00e9 en mesure de faire face \u00e0 l'incendie initial s'ils avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9tect\u00e9s suffisamment t\u00f4t et si le bon type d'extincteur avait \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9. Au-del\u00e0 de ces consid\u00e9rations, les r\u00e8gles de construction modernes sont \u00e9galement tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rentes aujourd'hui. De meilleures sorties de secours auraient permis \u00e0 un plus grand nombre de personnes d'\u00e9vacuer facilement les lieux. Les escaliers et autres couloirs auraient \u00e9t\u00e9 mieux con\u00e7us. Des syst\u00e8mes d'alarme incendie fixes et temporaires existent pour alerter non seulement le personnel sur place, mais aussi les personnes \u00e0 l'ext\u00e9rieur, y compris les services d'urgence.<br \/><\/span><span>Il est tragique de constater que des centaines d'hommes, de femmes et d'enfants auraient \u00e9t\u00e9 sauv\u00e9s si l'\u00e9v\u00e9nement s'\u00e9tait produit plus tard... mais les le\u00e7ons tir\u00e9es de cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement ont contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 fa\u00e7onner la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 dont nous jouissons aujourd'hui.<\/p><\/span><span><\/div><\/span><span><p><\/span><\/h3><\/div><div
