National Safe Work Month: Building a Safer Tomorrow
NEWS
National Safe Work Month
Building a Safer Tomorrow
Australia's construction industry is renowned for its remarkable structures and engineering feats. Yet, beneath the towering skyscrapers and intricate projects lies a stark reality—worker safety remains a critical concern. As we embark on National Safe Work Month, it's imperative to cast a spotlight on this pivotal sector, dissecting the statistics that tell a tale of challenges and the need for change.
Staggering Statistics
Over the five-year period from 2016 to 2020, Australia’s construction industry bore witness to a somber tally—a total of 154 worker fatalities. This shocking figure underscores the pressing need to address safety concerns within the industry.
Perhaps even more concerning is that the majority of these fatalities, a staggering 58%, unfolded within the Construction services industry sub-division. These are not just numbers; they represent lives lost, families shattered, and communities scarred.
The Youthful Impact
Another concerning facet emerges when we delve deeper into these statistics. Workers under the age of 25, the budding talents of our workforce, accounted for 13% of fatalities in the Construction industry during this period. This stands in stark contrast to the 8% figure for fatalities across all industries during these five years. The youth, brimming with promise and potential, should not bear such a disproportionate share of this burden.
Industry’s Response
Despite these troubling statistics, the construction industry in Australia has not remained passive. It has embraced a proactive stance, with companies investing in comprehensive safety training, implementing stringent safety protocols, and adopting innovative solutions.
National Safe Work Month
As we celebrate National Safe Work Month, it is not merely an observance but a call to action. It is a call to everyone involved in the construction industry—employers, workers, regulators, and society as a whole—to join hands and rewrite this narrative.
Together, we can create a culture where every worker, regardless of age or role, returns home safely at the end of each day. The statistics may paint a grim picture, but through united efforts, we can replace it with one that celebrates safety, progress, and a brighter future for all.
Conclusion
The construction industry is the backbone of Australia’s development, and the safety of its workers is a non-negotiable foundation. During National Safe Work Month and beyond, let us stand united in our unwavering commitment to reshape the statistics, ensuring that they no longer represent lives lost but lives saved, and that the construction industry becomes a model of safety, resilience, and progress, with innovative technologies like WES3 leading the way.

San Francisco fire code change marks pivotal moment in us construction history
NEWS
San Francisco Fire Code Change
Marking a pivotal moment in us construction history
A NEW San Francisco Fire Code update, which requires the use of an approved temporary wireless fire detection and notification system during the construction of wood-frame buildings, has been hailed as a ‘pioneering moment in US construction history’ by leading fire safety experts.
Wireless emergency and evacuation system solutions provider, Ramtech, and North American distribution partner, Space Age Electronics, have praised the San Francisco Fire Department following its decision to include the revision in the new 2023 San Francisco Fire Code. The change is also documented in the San Francisco Building Department Information Sheet FS-04. Now, thanks to the use of 24/7 detection and notification system technology, both businesses predict that more lives will be saved and millions of dollars in damage caused by fire will be reduced.
Joseph Cervantes, western region business development manager at Space Age Electronics, said: “This truly is a pioneering moment for US construction and for San Francisco, which will revolutionize the fire safety of this city. For too long, construction sites in the area have been left vulnerable and it has taken a number of years and hard lessons learned to reach this point, including historical and recent devastating fires in Berkeley, California and others in the United States.
“In a city as densely populated as San Francisco, the damage potential from a fire is catastrophic if it is left to spread, so any measures that can be taken to improve response times is important. I am therefore very proud that a temporary wireless fire detection and notification system during the construction of wood-frame building is now a code requirement. I hope in future this will be adopted all over the US and extended to all types of buildings, not just wood-frame, as no construction site is immune to the impact of fire and its harmful consequences.”
Developers and site contractors in San Francisco must now be aware of the new requirement to have an approved temporary wireless fire and detection notification system. The code, which went into force January 1, 2023, now forms part of the planning process and is a condition that must be met in order to obtain a new building permit.
James Pecz, global marketing and business development manager at Ramtech, said: “This is important news for San Francisco, and we will be working closely with Space Age Electronics to support construction site managers in complying with the new rules set by the San Francisco Fire Department. We understand that lots of construction sites across the US use foot patrols and air horns to detect and raise the alarm, but these methods aren’t foolproof and can cost lives and thousands of dollars in damage, due to the simple fact a person cannot be everywhere at once.
“By taking a stand and enforcing the use of innovative wireless systems such as our WES system, protection is constant meaning that no matter the time or place the fire can be detected and communicated to personnel. With an unlimited number of units able to be used per site, more units can be added as the build progresses and in any location, due to the three-year lifespan battery design not requiring a hardwired power source. We’re proud that our WES system is a San Francisco Fire Department approved option that will help contractors raise fire safety construction standards moving forwards.”
Ramtech and Space Age Electronics will be attending the 2023 NFPA Conference & Expo in Las Vegas 19-23 June, raising awareness of the benefits that wireless detection and notification systems can offer. In the US, every state sets out its own regulations and every municipality has its own fire safety code, with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) central to fire safety education and NFPA 241 (Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations) providing the specific guidance relevant to construction projects. Ramtech delivers wireless fire protection for new eco design in heart of Paris
NEWS
Ramtech Delivers
Wireless fire protection for new eco design in heart of Paris
The Arboretum, in the heart of Paris, involves the major transformation of a brownfield site into a 125,000 sqm, low-carbon office campus. Due to its solid wood structure, wireless solutions experts Ramtech was approached by contractor, The GCC Groupe, to provide reliable protection. Situated within a nine-hectare park on the banks of the River Seine, the Arboretum is the largest tertiary campus currently under development in Paris. Work commenced in October 2020 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. Throughout this time, and up until its completion, the under-construction site has needed protection from the risk of fire.
Why is fire a concern?
Due to the scale of the project and the fact the site is made largely of wood, the threat of a fire breaking out and destroying the development is a real risk – while responsibly sourced wood is a sustainable building material choice, its combustible nature poses risks. The threat of fire isn’t limited to wooden structures, however. All building materials, even with fire stopping and fire-retardant measures in place, can also be at risk. Therefore, having a reliable fire alarm system put in place during construction is always going to be crucial to ensuring the safety of workers and the development itself – with the Arboretum no exception.
An innovative solution
To provide a solution worthy of such an innovative project, the Arboretum required a fire alarm system that could quickly be installed, would not damage the structure, or require wiring, which would not be possible during the construction phase. A reliable supplier, who could also design and deliver the system, despite the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, was another key factor.
The Arboretum used contractor GCC Groupe, which recommended the Ramtech WES3 wireless fire alarm system. Having used the fully EN54-25 compliant system successfully on previous projects, GCC Groupe knew that the system would be able to meet the needs of the Arboretum with ease. A major benefit of the WES3 is how scalable the system is, so even large projects like the Arboretum can be protected without a problem. To provide complete coverage, around 300 units, using Ramtech’s WES3 system, have been deployed across the site. This included 218 dust resistant smoke detectors placed at strategic points across the building, leaving no potential gaps.
In addition, 70 manual call points were put in place, with the added security of unit numbering, which would aid pinpointing the exact unit triggered in the event of an alarm. Five links were installed to cater for the large and complex construction site, which acts as a relay to link geographically separated sections of the site together. The WES temporary fire alarm is then linked to other systems through one interface. This ensures elements such as turnstiles work together efficiently within the whole system. One CONNECT and one GSM base station was also included in the set up to enable GCC to receive configurable SMS notifications of alarm, tamper or system faults. Christian Valero Rose at Ramtech, said: “Having a solution that is both time and cost effective has never been more important, and when it comes to safety there can be no compromises. Being able to deliver for this project throughout the pandemic was another challenge, but Ramtech was able to supply the completely wireless system, which has been designed bespoke to the needs of the project and can also change and adapt as the development progresses.
“The impact of coronavirus has brought about a new age of risk for the construction industry. Despite a strong recovery, the industry is still faced with both short- and long-term challenges in overcoming the shortage of key equipment and materials, the spike in procurement costs, longer lead times, schedule and cost overruns, compromised supply chains, skilled labour shortages, ever-changing workplace protocols, and increased competition for limited work.
“Being able to find effective solutions that require minimal time and expertise, allowed for this project to get underway safely and not rely on additional workforce to keep the site under observation. WES acts in place of multiple roles and is easy to set up, which was undoubtedly a key factor during the pandemic.” The mesh network that connects these individual units together meant that across the large site, there was still connectivity which played into the decision to go with Ramtech. With an impressive three-year battery life, WES3 also works well in eliminating the need to reinstall throughout the project. It will instead see the development through to the end and for some time after that, giving full 24/7 coverage.

Holiday park security: your top four questions answered
NEWS
Holiday Park Security
Your top four questions answered
Offering peace of mind for holiday park site managers, staff and holiday home owners should always be a priority. Whether it’s a small, family-run park or a large national brand, having a personalised, robust and reliable site monitoring system can make all the difference. Tom Ambler, sales manager for leisure at Ramtech, shares how wireless solutions can provide a simple and effective way to keep sites safe and secure.
For the past three decades, wireless solutions firm Ramtech has been providing trusted site safety and security monitoring systems. This experience has helped to keep numerous parks connected and responsive to a wide range of concerns, such as break-in, fire and arson. While all holiday parks hope there will never be an intrusion or safety emergency, being prepared offers essential peace of mind for site and holiday home owners, protecting their investment no matter what, and potentially saving thousands of pounds in damage every year through 24/7 monitoring and early detection.
When is a holiday park at most risk?
While a security breach or emergency cannot always be predicted, there are certain times of year that can be considered more of a risk. During quieter seasons, early in the new year or the post-summer lull, there may be less guests around. This could allow an opportunity for intruders to slip by unnoticed, risking potential theft and damage to holiday homes. During the winter, there is also more risk of weather-related issues, which could damage properties. Busy seasons such as spring and summer can also carry a risk factor, however, simply due to the sheer number of visitors and an increase in BBQ or other open fires if permitted. Having a reliable system that delivers 24/7 monitoring, gives reassurance to site and holiday home owners that in the event of an emergency, the park management will be alerted and be able to respond quickly.
What protection measures can be put in place?
Holiday parks can have multiple security and site management systems in place. Popular forms of protection include physical teams of security staff patrolling parks, CCTV cameras, intruder alarms and more. It isn’t uncommon for parks to utilise a combination of tools, however managing multiple systems often leads to increased cost and more time spent managing the park security.
With a system such as Ramtech’s WISE, holiday parks can be safely monitored every minute of the day. This means that real time alerts, data, and information will be shared as it happens. Powered by long-life batteries and connected to a reliable radio technology, the WISE security system allows thousands of devices to be linked to a central base station that creates an instant, silent alert via email, text, or pager. WISE is not dependent on SIM or WiFi to function, which is great for secluded locations or forest retreats with little or no data or internet coverage.
You can even use WISE in conjunction with other useful systems, such as the Ramtech WES3 – an EN54-25 compliant addressable wireless fire alarm system, with automatic smoke and heat detectors designed to respond to site incidents and maintain 24/7 coverage. Once it is linked with Ramtech’s REACT platform, park managers can also create a fully integrated, instant emergency response system. The mobile device app and management tool, accessed via web browser, means a park can still be monitored closely from anywhere in the world.
Will investing in park security measures suggest the park is unsafe?
According to Mintel’s 2022 report report of the UK’s holiday parks and centres, the market is currently worth an estimated £3 billion with new investment and growth predicted in the coming years. In order to protect these vital assets, investing in security measures is a must. Even the safest parks are not immune to an emergency, and having a robust system will only stand to increase confidence and create more custom for a holiday park.
The addition of a system such as WISE also builds into the connected park offering, creating added value for the site. Connected parks link together security and other monitoring requirements of the park to keep it safer and more efficient than ever before. An example of this technology in action is at Scampston Park Lodges, which has used Ramtech’s wireless WISE security and monitoring system to cover the 35-acre site, since 2011. If one of the 27 alarms is activated inside a lodge due to a break-in, this works with the REACT cloud-based system to deliver a notification, which is instantly sent to park staff, pinpointing the exact lodge for a response.
As well as having safety features, WISE is also able to connect holiday homes to park teams, ensuring any regular upkeep and maintenance is catered for whilst homes are unoccupied. Additions such as this give that extra level of reassurance to guests that their assets are well looked after, even when they aren’t at the park.
When is the best time to prepare a holiday park?
A park can be prepared at any time of the year with excellent results. Because Ramtech systems can be speedily set up due to the wireless nature of the technology, this means deployment is quick and there is also no complicated or costly electrical installation works required. Ramtech’s team of engineers are also on hand to provide guided support to ensure a seamless experience. That being said, in the off season such as winter and just before the peak season in summer, are the two optimum times to get a holiday park set up. This will mean site managers and holiday home owners can get to know the system before the park becomes overly busy.

Italian Holiday Parks Lead the Way by Introducing New Fire Safety Law
NEWS
Italian Holiday Parks
Lead the Way by Introducing New Fire Safety Law
Holiday park operators and the electrical contractors that service them will rely more on wireless alarm systems predicts Ramtech, as Italy leads the way by introducing a new law from 01 Jan 2022.
According to Ramtech, Italy’s change in law – which will require every camping site in Italy to have an evacuation system in place – could have wider impact across Europe, as other sites look to reassure customers and safeguard parks. With the installation of traditional, wired fire alarms systems not usually an option at camp sites, wireless technology is therefore going to be heavily relied upon.
Christian Valero Rosé, export sales – Europe at Ramtech, said: “The installation of traditional, wired fire alarms systems, is usually not practical or feasible; some campsites house literally tens of thousands of people, making it a huge, if not impossible, job to equip every building. However, technology has advanced greatly, and wireless fire alarm systems have become increasingly reliable, adaptable and cost-effective.” Many campsites in Europe are more akin to small cities, and with guests enjoying outdoor barbeques and pine needles falling from surrounding trees, this can spell a recipe for disaster. Christian explains it is important to learn from Italy and start more conversations surrounding fire safety and how wireless technology can support.
Christian, said: “Now that Italy has recognised that improved fire safety is imperative, this will likely be the catalyst for other European countries to do the same. Ramtech urges that action is taken now, as despite campsites being full of potential fire hazards and elements that can cause a small blaze to spread within minutes, most current regulations allow low-level protection.
“The good news is that wireless systems have become the most appropriate way of guarding a site and raising the alarm in case of fire, enabling guests to take action and evacuate, which, in turn, helps to avoid serious damage and prevents potential loss of life. The speed of response that this brings – combined with the ease of management – can literally save lives in an emergency situation.
“Overall, wireless technology can provide operators and travellers the peace of mind that camping has never been safer. And, if something does go wrong, there is a reliable failsafe option to alert guests of danger, allowing a swift and effective evacuation process. Park operators and their contractors must now make the investment to ensure they remain open and reputable if the worst was to happen.”
